Target intelligence / Profile preview
Promotes gastric motility refers to the physiological enhancement of the rate at which the stomach empties its contents into the duodenum, a process essential for normal digestion (StatPearls, 2023). This term describes a pharmacological or biological effect rather than a single molecular target, as gastric motility is regulated by a complex interplay of the enteric nervous system, smooth muscle cells, and various receptors (NIH, 2022). Key molecular targets that mediate this effect include the 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 4 (5-HT4), the Dopamine D2 receptor, the Motilin receptor, and the Ghrelin receptor (PubMed, 2021). Drugs that promote gastric motility, known as prokinetic agents, are used to treat clinical conditions such as gastroparesis, functional dyspepsia, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, 2020). Because multiple distinct pathways can be modulated to achieve this outcome, the term is used to categorize a therapeutic class of drugs rather than a specific protein or enzyme (FDA, 2022).
Enhancement of gastric motility via 5-HT4 receptor agonism, Dopamine D2 receptor antagonism, Motilin receptor agonism, or Acetylcholinesterase inhibition, leading to increased cholinergic activity in the enteric nervous system.
