Promotion of healthy gut microbiota

Overview

"Promotion of healthy gut microbiota" does not refer to a specific molecule, receptor, enzyme, transporter or other canonical therapeutic target. Instead, it describes an overall strategy or goal aimed at supporting the balance and diversity of microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. The human gut microbiota comprises bacteria, fungi and viruses that play essential roles in digestion (especially complex carbohydrates), vitamin synthesis (such as B vitamins), immune regulation—including both innate and adaptive responses—and protection against pathogens by competitive exclusion. A diverse and balanced microbial community is associated with resilience against disturbances like antibiotics or infections; reduced diversity has been linked to diseases such as IBD, obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Interventions that promote a healthy gut include dietary changes (e.g., increased fiber intake), probiotics/prebiotics supplementation and sometimes fecal transplantation. However—since “promotion” refers to an outcome rather than an actionable molecular entity—it should not be considered a valid therapeutic target per se.[1][2][3]
