Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons are a specialized population of neurons primarily located in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. They play a central role in regulating metabolism, energy homeostasis, appetite, and reproduction by integrating peripheral and central metabolic cues. These neurons express the *Pomc* gene, which encodes the precursor polypeptide pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). Activation of POMC neurons leads to reduced food intake and increased energy expenditure.
