Proopiomelanocortin Neurons (POMC)

Target
POMC
Molecular classification
Neuron, Neuroendocrine cell

Overview

Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons are a specialized population of neurons primarily located in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. They play a central role in regulating metabolism, energy homeostasis, appetite, and reproduction by integrating peripheral and central metabolic cues. These neurons express the *Pomc* gene, which encodes the precursor polypeptide pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). Activation of POMC neurons leads to reduced food intake and increased energy expenditure. Disruption or abnormal processing within these neuronal circuits can lead to disorders such as obesity due to impaired satiety signaling or altered energy homeostasis.
