Overview

Prospective food consumption is a subjective measure of appetite used extensively in clinical research to evaluate hunger and satiety levels. It is typically assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) where participants respond to the question, 'How much food do you think you could eat right now?' (Flint et al., 2000). While it is a reliable indicator of an individual's motivation to eat, it is a behavioral and psychological endpoint rather than a biological molecule or receptor. In pharmacological studies, prospective food consumption serves as a key pharmacodynamic marker to assess the efficacy of anti-obesity medications, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which reduce this measure by acting on the central nervous system to enhance satiety (Blundell et al., 2010). Because it represents a subjective state, it is often used in conjunction with other measures like 'fullness' and 'desire to eat' to provide a comprehensive profile of a drug's effect on appetite regulation.
