Prostacyclin Synthesis Inhibition

Molecular classification
Pathway, Lipid Metabolism
01

Overview

Prostacyclin (PGI₂) is a potent vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation. Inhibition of prostacyclin synthesis refers to any process or intervention that reduces or blocks the production of PGI₂. This can occur through inhibition of cyclooxygenases (COX) by NSAIDs, interference with arachidonic acid release, or direct inhibition of prostacyclin synthase. Inhibiting prostacyclin synthesis may lead to increased risk for thrombosis and enhanced vasoconstriction.
