Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1)

Target
PGE1
Molecular classification
Prostaglandin, Lipid mediator
01

Overview

Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), also known as alprostadil, is a naturally occurring prostaglandin that acts as a potent vasodilator and smooth muscle relaxant. It is used to maintain the patency of the ductus arteriosus in neonates with congenital heart defects and to treat erectile dysfunction.

Other names
Alprostadil(13E,15S)-11α,15-dihydroxy-9-oxoprost-13-en-1-oic acid
02

Mechanism of action

PGE1 exerts its effects primarily through binding to specific G protein-coupled receptors known as EP receptors—subtypes EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4. This binding leads to vasodilation, inhibition of platelet aggregation, and relaxation of smooth muscle tissue.
