Prostaglandin-Endoperoxide Synthase (Cyclooxygenase) (COX)

Target
COX
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Heme peroxidase
01

Overview

Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase, commonly known as cyclooxygenase (COX), is a key enzyme responsible for the biosynthesis of prostanoids, including prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and prostacyclins from arachidonic acid. There are two main isoforms: COX-1 (constitutively expressed, involved in homeostatic functions) and COX-2 (inducible, primarily associated with inflammation). Inhibition of COX is the mechanism of action for NSAIDs. COX converts arachidonic acid into PGH2, a precursor for other prostanoids, playing roles in inflammation, vascular tone, thrombosis, and other physiological processes.
