Overview
Prostaglandin G/H synthase 1 (COX-1) is a key enzyme responsible for the biosynthesis of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid. It is constitutively expressed in most tissues and plays a crucial role in maintaining physiological functions such as gastric mucosal protection, regulation of blood flow, platelet aggregation, and kidney function. Inhibition of COX-1 by NSAIDs can lead to adverse effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration.
