Overview

The Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2) promoter, commonly known as the COX-2 promoter, is a regulatory DNA sequence located upstream of the PTGS2 gene that governs the inducible expression of the cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme [1]. Unlike the constitutively expressed COX-1, COX-2 expression is tightly regulated and rapidly induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines, growth factors, and tumor promoters through the activation of signaling cascades that culminate in the binding of transcription factors such as NF-κB, AP-1, and CREB to the promoter [2][3].
