The prostaglandin F receptor (FP) is a G protein-coupled receptor that binds prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). Activation of FP primarily couples to Gq proteins, increasing intracellular calcium. It plays a role in smooth muscle contraction, intraocular pressure regulation, female reproduction, and cardiovascular function. It is a therapeutic target for glaucoma, with potential applications in managing preterm labor and hypertension. Expression is regulated transcriptionally and post-transcriptionally, allowing for fine-tuned control based on physiological or pathological states.
Agonists bind to the FP receptor, activating Gq proteins, leading to increased intracellular calcium and downstream effects. Antagonists block PGF2α binding, preventing receptor activation and downstream signaling.
