The prostaglandin F2 alpha receptor (FP, gene PTGFR) is a G protein-coupled receptor that binds prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), a potent lipid mediator involved in various physiological and pathological processes. It plays a central role in female reproduction, cardiovascular function, and other processes. It is targeted by drugs used for inducing labor/abortion and modulating intraocular pressure. Dysregulation is linked with hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Primarily couples to Gq proteins activating phospholipase C, increasing IP3/diacylglycerol, and mobilizing intracellular Ca²⁺. Can also activate Rho family GTPases via G12/G13 proteins and in some cells, couples to Gi proteins.
