The Prostaglandin F2alpha receptor (FP receptor) is a G protein-coupled receptor that binds and mediates the biological actions of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). It plays a crucial role in female reproductive system functions, such as luteolysis and parturition. Activation of the FP receptor triggers various signaling pathways, primarily through Gq protein coupling, leading to downstream effects including calcium mobilization and protein kinase C activation. Synthetic analogs targeting this pathway are used clinically for inducing labor, abortion, and glaucoma treatment. Potential therapeutic target areas include cardiovascular diseases due to its role in vascular tone regulation.
Agonist binding activates Gq proteins, leading to phospholipase C activation, IP3 and DAG production, intracellular Ca²⁺ mobilization, and activation of protein kinase C pathways. Can also couple with Gi proteins in some cells/tissues.
