Target
PGI₃
Molecular classification
Eicosanoid, Prostaglandin, Lipid mediator
01

Overview

Prostaglandin I3 (PGI₃) is an eicosanoid derived from eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). It acts as an anti-aggregatory agent by inhibiting platelet aggregation and promoting vasodilation, thereby playing a protective role against thrombosis. Its synthesis is mediated by cyclooxygenase (COX) and prostacyclin synthase enzymes. PGI₃, similar to its analog PGI₂, counteracts the pro-aggregatory effects of thromboxane A₂ (TXA₂), contributing to cardiovascular protection.
