Overview

Prostaglandin-mediated vasodilation refers to the process by which prostaglandins induce the relaxation and widening of blood vessels. This mechanism plays a crucial role in regulating vascular tone, blood flow, and blood pressure. Prostaglandins such as PGE2 and PGI2 bind to specific G protein-coupled receptors (EP4 and IP, respectively) on vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to increased cAMP/cGMP, decreased intracellular calcium, and resultant vasodilation. This process is important in various physiological functions including blood flow regulation, blood pressure control, renal function, and prevention of thrombosis. Dysregulation can contribute to diseases such as hypertension, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
