Prostaglandin production refers to the biosynthesis of prostaglandins, a group of bioactive lipid compounds derived from fatty acids. These molecules act as autocrine and paracrine mediators, playing crucial roles in inflammation, homeostasis, and various physiological processes. The process begins with arachidonic acid, converted to PGG₂ and PGH₂ by cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2), followed by terminal synthases that generate different prostanoids (PGE₂, PGI₂, PGD₂, PGF2α, TXA₂). Prostaglandins exert their effects through binding to specific G protein-coupled receptors located on target cells. Their functions include modulating inflammation, regulating vascular tone and platelet aggregation, and maintaining gastric mucosal integrity. Altered prostaglandin profiles contribute significantly to disease progression by modulating local immune responses and tissue remodeling.
