Prostaglandin reductase 1 (PTGR1) is an NADPH-dependent alkenal/one oxidoreductase that plays a central role in the metabolic detoxification of alkenals and ketones, particularly medium-chain compounds. It is a rate-limiting enzyme in arachidonic acid metabolism, deactivating eicosanoids like prostaglandins and leukotriene B4. PTGR1 is involved in cell proliferation and cancer biology, with altered expression affecting tumor metabolism and progression. It also participates in drug metabolism, activating certain prodrugs. Due to its diverse roles, PTGR1 is being investigated as a potential therapeutic target for cancer and other diseases.
