Overview

Prostate and testis expressed protein 2 (PATE2) is a small, secreted, cysteine-rich protein encoded by the C11orf38 gene in humans. It is expressed predominantly in the prostate and testis, as its name suggests. PATE2 belongs to the PATE (prostate and testis expressed) gene family, which includes proteins that share structural similarity with toxins found in some animal venoms, characterized by a three-finger protein domain. These proteins are thought to play a role in the maturation and function of sperm, possibly contributing to protection against infection in the male reproductive tract, but the precise biological function of PATE2 remains to be fully elucidated. There is no strong evidence to date that PATE2 is a therapeutic target, receptor, or enzyme, and it is not known to interact with drugs or serve as a biomarker or safety concern in clinical settings. Research on PATE2 is ongoing, largely in the context of reproductive biology.
