Overview

Prostate cancer susceptibility candidate protein 1 (PRAC1) is a small nuclear protein of approximately 6 kDa, encoded by the PRAC1 gene on chromosome 17q21, located about 4 kb downstream from the HOXB13 gene. It is specifically and highly expressed in prostate, rectum, and distal colon tissues, as well as in some prostate cancer cell lines. Protein localization studies and sequence analysis suggest a regulatory function in the nucleus, potentially related to tissue-specific gene expression. Aberrant epigenetic regulation (notably DNA methylation) of PRAC1 is associated with more aggressive tumor behavior and poor prognostic features in both prostate and bladder cancers, indicating utility as a prognostic biomarker; however, it is not currently considered a therapeutic target, and no known drugs interact directly with PRAC1.
