PSA

Overview

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced almost exclusively by cells of the prostate gland. It functions as an androgen-regulated serine protease enzyme and its main physiological role is to cleave semenogelins within the seminal coagulum, aiding sperm motility by liquefying seminal fluid after ejaculation. Clinically, PSA is primarily used as a biomarker for screening, diagnosis, and monitoring prostate cancer. Elevated serum PSA can also result from benign conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostatitis.
