Overview

The prostatic urethra is the portion of the male urethra that traverses the prostate gland. It extends from the bladder neck to the membranous urethra, is about 3–4 cm long, and serves as a conduit for both urine and semen. It contains the openings of the ejaculatory ducts and several prostatic ducts, and it is histologically composed of urothelium surrounded by the glandular and stromal tissue of the periurethral zone of the prostate. Conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia can cause obstruction of this segment, and clinical knowledge is crucial to prevent injury during medical procedures such as catheterization.
