Overview

Proteolytic enzyme activity refers to the function of proteolytic enzymes, also known as proteases, peptidases, or proteinases. These enzymes catalyze the breakdown (hydrolysis) of proteins into smaller polypeptides or amino acids by cleaving peptide bonds. They are found in all forms of life and play essential roles in numerous biological processes, including digestion, immune response regulation, cell signaling, apoptosis, protein quality control, and tissue remodeling. Abnormalities in proteolytic enzyme activity can lead to diseases due to improper regulation or accumulation/deficiency in key peptides/proteins.
