Overview

Proteasome activator complex subunit 2 (PSME2) encodes the beta subunit of the 11S regulator (PA28) complex, a proteasome activator that forms a heterohexameric ring with alpha and beta subunits. This regulator can replace the 19S cap on the 20S proteasome, especially in interferon-gamma induced immunoproteasomes, thereby enhancing the generation of class I MHC binding peptides for antigen presentation. The PA28 complex modulates the proteolytic activity of the core proteasome, affecting immune response, protein turnover, and cellular homeostasis. PSME2's function is critical for efficient antigen processing, and altered expression has been associated with disease states such as cancer, immunodeficiency, and inflammatory conditions[1][2][6][7].
