Overview

POMP pseudogene 1 (POMPP1) is a pseudogene related to the functional gene POMP (Proteasome maturation protein). POMP is an essential chaperone that mediates the assembly of the 20S proteasome complex at the endoplasmic reticulum, being crucial for proteasome biogenesis in cells[2]. However, POMPP1 itself is a non-protein-coding pseudogene and does not play a direct role in proteasome assembly or cellular proteostasis. It is not considered a therapeutic target, nor does it have established clinical, functional, or pharmacological roles. POMP (the functional protein, not the pseudogene) is critical for the maturation and assembly of the proteasome, a multisubunit protease complex required for regulated proteolysis in eukaryotic cells[2]. POMP pseudogene(s) may exist in the genome, but do not encode functional protein and thus are not valid drug targets. If requesting druggable targets, the correct entry is the functional Proteasome maturation protein (POMP), not POMPP1.
