Proteasome subunit alpha refers to any of the seven distinct alpha-type subunits (alpha 1–7) that form part of the 20S core particle of the eukaryotic proteasome complex. These subunits are essential for proteasome assembly and function, forming two outer rings in the barrel-shaped 20S core structure. Alpha-subunits do not possess catalytic activity themselves but regulate access to the proteolytic chamber where protein degradation occurs. They are involved in various cellular pathways including immune signaling, cell cycle regulation, stress response, apoptosis, DNA repair, etc. Alpha-type proteasomal subunits have been implicated in the regulation by viral proteins and interact with E3 ligases like Parkin and transcription factors like HIF‑1α.
