Protein and lipid deposits on contact lens surfaces are accumulations of tear film components—primarily proteins (e.g., lysozyme, lactoferrin, albumin, immunoglobulins, mucins) and lipids (cholesterol esters, triglycerides, phospholipids)—as well as environmental debris and contaminants. These deposits form rapidly after lens insertion and continue to accumulate over days to weeks, depending on lens material, tear composition, hygiene practices, and environmental exposure. Deposits negatively affect lens comfort, visual acuity, and ocular health by reducing lens wettability, blocking oxygen permeability, and providing a surface for microbial adhesion and growth. Denatured proteins are immunogenic and can trigger inflammation or allergic responses. Lipid-rich "jelly bumps" are especially common with high-water-content hydrogel lenses. Removal and prevention rely on regular cleaning, use of enzyme-based protein removers, and proper lens replacement schedules. Disposable lenses minimize long-term deposit accumulation and associated risks.
