Protein Arginine Methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1)

Target
PRMT1
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protein arginine methyltransferase, Histone modification

Overview

Protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) is the predominant type I protein arginine methyltransferase in mammals. It catalyzes the transfer of methyl groups from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) to the guanidino nitrogens of arginine residues in target proteins, resulting in monomethylation and asymmetric dimethylation. This post-translational modification plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression, chromatin remodeling, signal transduction, RNA processing, and other cellular processes. Dysregulation of PRMT1 has been implicated in various human diseases including cancer, making it a therapeutic target.
