Overview

Protein-arginine N-methyltransferase 4 (PRMT4), also known as CARM1, is an epigenetic enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of methyl groups from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) to arginine residues in proteins, resulting in asymmetric dimethylation. This post-translational modification regulates gene transcription, RNA splicing, cell proliferation, and development. PRMT4 methylates histone H3 at arginines 17 and 26, and non-histone proteins, influencing chromatin structure and gene expression. It is implicated in cancer and immune suppression during sepsis. Inhibitors like TP-064 have been developed for research. Knockout studies show PRMT4 is essential for mouse development.
