Protein-arginine N-methyltransferase 6 (PRMT6) is an enzyme belonging to the protein arginine methyltransferase family. It catalyzes the transfer of methyl groups from S-adenosyl-L-methionine to arginine residues in proteins, resulting in methylated arginine derivatives. PRMT6 is a type I PRMT, primarily catalyzing asymmetric dimethylation of arginine residues, especially at Arg2 on histone H3 (H3R2me2a), an epigenetic marker for transcriptional repression. Dysregulation of PRMT6 has been implicated in various cancers and male infertility, making it a therapeutic target for inhibitor development.
