Overview

Protein biosynthesis, also known as protein synthesis, is a fundamental biological process in all living cells. It refers to the creation of new proteins, balancing the loss of cellular proteins through degradation or export by producing new ones. Proteins are essential for numerous cellular functions, acting as enzymes, structural components, and hormones. Protein biosynthesis occurs in two main stages: transcription (DNA to mRNA) and translation (mRNA to protein). Targeting protein biosynthesis is a valid therapeutic strategy, particularly in the context of bacterial infections, where differences in the prokaryotic and eukaryotic protein synthesis machinery allow for selective inhibition.
