Protein Disulfide-Isomerase (PDI)

Target
PDI
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase, Chaperone
01

Overview

Protein disulfide-isomerase (PDI) is a multifunctional enzyme primarily located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of eukaryotic cells. It plays a central role in catalyzing the formation, reduction, and isomerization of disulfide bonds during protein folding, ensuring correct protein conformation and quality control. PDI also exhibits chaperone activity by preventing aggregation of misfolded proteins and directing them for degradation if proper folding cannot be achieved. It is implicated in several diseases including neurodegenerative disorders, cancer and viral infections.
