Protein geranylgeranyltransferase-I (GGTase-I) is an essential enzyme in eukaryotes that catalyzes the transfer of a 20-carbon isoprenoid lipid (geranylgeranyl group) to the sulfur atom of a cysteine residue located near the C-terminus of target proteins. This post-translational modification, prenylation, is crucial for the membrane association and proper function of many signaling proteins, particularly small GTPases. GGTase-I is a heterodimer composed of alpha and beta subunits and is a therapeutic target for cancer, infectious diseases, and other disorders.
