A protein-hapten complex is a molecular entity formed when a small molecule known as a *hapten* covalently binds to a larger carrier protein. Haptens alone are not immunogenic—they cannot elicit an immune response by themselves—but when attached to proteins, they form new antigenic determinants (epitopes) that can be recognized by the immune system. These complexes are central in hypersensitivity reactions such as drug allergies and contact dermatitis. They may also play roles in autoimmunity if self-proteins become modified. The complex formation occurs through covalent attachment of the hapten to the carrier protein, often via reactive chemical groups or through the use of cross-linking agents.
