Protein kinase AMP-activated non-catalytic subunit beta 1 is a regulatory component of the heterotrimeric AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) complex. The AMPK complex consists of a catalytic alpha (α) subunit and two regulatory subunits: beta (β) and gamma (γ). PRKAB1 encodes the β₁ isoform of the non-catalytic beta subunit in humans. It acts as a positive regulator and adaptor within the AMPK complex, facilitates assembly, and contains a glycogen-binding domain. Myristoylation and phosphorylation of this subunit modulate enzyme activity and localization. It may influence energy homeostasis through modulation of fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis.
