Akt, also known as Protein Kinase B (PKB), is a serine/threonine-specific protein kinase that plays a central role in multiple cellular processes, including metabolism, cell proliferation, survival (anti-apoptosis), growth, and angiogenesis. It is a key component of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway and is activated in response to growth factors or insulin. Dysregulation or hyperactivation of Akt has been implicated in various diseases including cancer, diabetes, and inflammatory disorders.
Akt inhibitors block the activity of Akt kinases, leading to decreased cell proliferation, increased apoptosis, and inhibition of angiogenesis.
