Protein kinase C beta (PKCβ) is a serine/threonine-specific kinase activated by calcium and diacylglycerol (DAG). It is a member of the protein kinase C (PKC) family. PKCβ participates in numerous cellular processes, including B cell activation, apoptosis, endothelial cell proliferation and intestinal sugar absorption. PKCβ has been implicated in tumorigenesis, making it a target for cancer therapy. Selective inhibitors like enzastaurin have shown efficacy against tumor growth/angiogenesis, and ruboxistaurin is under clinical investigation for diabetic complications.
