Overview

Protein kinase C beta type (PKCβI) is a serine/threonine protein kinase belonging to the conventional/classical PKC subfamily, encoded by the PRKCB gene[1][3][4][8]. PKCβI is activated by calcium and diacylglycerol (DAG) and is generated by alternative splicing as one of two isoforms (PKCβI and PKCβII)[3][5]. It participates in pivotal cellular processes including signal transduction, cell proliferation, apoptosis, immune cell activation, insulin secretion, and regulation of vascular and neural functions[1][3][5][6][8]. PKCβI is implicated in several disease processes, notably in various cancers, diabetic complications, cardiovascular disease, and immune-related disorders[5][3]. PKCβ inhibitors have been developed clinically, particularly for targeting diabetic microvascular complications and certain cancers, reflecting this kinase’s importance as a therapeutic target[5].
