Protein kinase C gamma type is an enzyme that belongs to the protein kinase C (PKC) family, which are serine- and threonine-specific kinases activated by calcium ions and diacylglycerol (DAG). PKC gamma is specifically expressed in neuronal tissues of the brain and spinal cord and plays critical roles in neuronal signaling pathways, including long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). Defects or mutations are linked with neurodegenerative disorders such as spinocerebellar ataxia type 14 (SCA14) and may contribute to retinitis pigmentosa or Parkinsonian syndromes.
