Overview

Protein kinase cAMP-dependent X-linked catalytic subunit (PRKX) is a serine/threonine kinase distinct from classical PKA, PKB/Akt, PKC, SGK, and PKG families but shares the property of cAMP-dependent activation. It plays roles in cellular signaling related to kidney development, epithelial morphogenesis, and granulocyte/macrophage maturation. PRKX is implicated in various developmental processes, sexual differentiation, and angiogenesis, and aberrant expression is associated with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, sex reversal disorders due to abnormal recombination, and some cancers. While functionally distinct, PRKX overlaps mechanistically with PKA but with notable substrate and regulatory differences, and is considered an enzyme of emerging biomedical interest[1][2][4][5][6].
