Protein MOST-1 (C8orf17)

Target
C8orf17
Molecular classification
Other (intronless gene, small polypeptide)
01

Overview

Protein MOST-1 (C8orf17) is encoded by an intronless gene located at chromosome 8q24.2, producing a small hydrophilic protein of 99 amino acids. Its mRNA shows low expression in most normal adult tissues, with notable overexpression and/or amplification in high-grade breast and prostate cancers. MOST-1 may play roles in cell proliferation, survival, differentiation, and tumorigenesis, though its precise biological function is still unclear. The gene’s locus coincides with chromosomal regions frequently amplified in cancer. There is evidence supporting its use as a potential biomarker for cancer progression but no data suggesting its direct therapeutic targeting or involvement with approved drugs.
