Protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 26 pseudogene 1 (PPP1R26P1) is classified as a pseudogene—an inactive, non-coding copy of the protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 26 gene. Unlike the protein-coding parental gene (PPP1R26), which is a regulatory subunit that interacts with and inhibits the phosphatase activity of protein phosphatase 1 (PP1)[1], PPP1R26P1 does not encode a functional protein product and has no established biological function or therapeutic relevance. PPP1R26P1 should not be confused with protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 26 (PPP1R26), which does have a protein product and plays a role as a regulatory subunit in PP1 holoenzyme complexes[1]. Pseudogenes such as PPP1R26P1 are generally regarded as non-functional genomic elements that do not encode proteins, though in rare cases pseudogenes may have regulatory roles; no such roles are reported for PPP1R26P1.
