Overview

PPP1R26P3 is a processed pseudogene that is genomically related to the *Protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 26* gene, which encodes regulatory proteins for protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) holoenzymes. Unlike its protein-coding parental gene, PPP1R26P3 is classified as a *pseudogene*: it does not appear to encode a functional protein due to truncations, mutations, or other disruptions characteristic of retrotransposed gene copies. Pseudogenes such as PPP1R26P3 were traditionally thought to lack biological function, but emerging evidence suggests that some are transcribed and may exert regulatory influence on their parental genes, for example by acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) or through the generation of non-coding RNAs that modulate RNA stability, localization, or translation[3]. However, there is no evidence that PPP1R26P3 is directly targeted by drugs, has a role in disease, or is used as a clinical biomarker. PPP1R26P3 should not be confused with the protein-coding gene PPP1R26 (Protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 26), which does play a biological role in inhibiting PP1 activity and may positively regulate cell proliferation[5]. No protein expression or drug-targeting relevance for PPP1R26P3 has been established, and its functional relevance, if any, remains speculative and likely regulatory at the RNA level rather than as a classical protein or receptor[3].
