Overview

Protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 36 (PPP1R36) is a regulatory protein that associates with and modulates the activity of protein phosphatase 1 (PP1), a critical serine/threonine phosphatase involved in diverse cellular processes. PPP1R36 is not itself an enzyme or receptor but acts to bind and inhibit PP1 phosphatase activity as part of larger protein complexes. It has been shown to promote autophagy, particularly in the context of gonadal development and spermatogenesis, likely through interaction with autophagy factors such as Atg16L1. PPP1R36 expression is enriched during testis development and may be involved in the early stages of sperm cell formation; however, its specific molecular targets and broader physiological and disease roles remain incompletely defined. There are currently no known therapeutic agents that target PPP1R36 directly, and it is not widely recognized as a clinical drug target or biomarker.
