Overview

Protein phosphatase 3 catalytic subunit gamma (PPP3CC) is a catalytic subunit of the calcium- and calmodulin-dependent serine/threonine phosphatase known as calcineurin. This enzyme plays a crucial role in intracellular Ca^2+-mediated signal transduction by dephosphorylating key regulatory proteins and transcription factors, including NFAT and ELK1. PPP3CC is highly conserved across species and shows specific expression in the testis, where it is implicated in sperm motility regulation. Mutations or altered expression of PPP3CC have been associated with neuropsychiatric and developmental disorders. Calcineurin, including PPP3CC, is targeted by immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus, which block its phosphatase activity and thus inhibit downstream immune response signaling
