Overview

Protein regulator of cytokinesis 1 (PRC1) is a non-motor microtubule-associated protein essential for central spindle formation and cytokinesis during cell division. It cross-links antiparallel microtubules at the spindle midzone, facilitating proper cell cleavage. PRC1 is tightly regulated by cell cycle-dependent phosphorylation and interacts with proteins such as Kinesin-4 and the centralspindlin complex. Dysregulation or overexpression of PRC1 is linked to genome instability, altered tumor immune environments, and poor prognosis in multiple cancer types, making it a candidate prognostic biomarker and a potential, though not yet clinically validated, therapeutic target.
