The protein synthesis machinery in hepatocytes refers to the cellular components and processes responsible for the production, folding, modification, and trafficking of proteins within liver cells. Hepatocytes are highly specialized for protein synthesis due to their central role in metabolism and secretion of plasma proteins. The machinery includes ribosomes, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus, chaperones/folding enzymes, and vesicular trafficking machinery. It is essential for producing plasma proteins (albumin, fibrinogen, clotting factors, lipoproteins, etc.), structural/intracellular enzymes for metabolic functions, and hepatokines. Dysregulation can lead to metabolic disorders or impaired liver function.
