Overview

Protein transport protein Sec24B is a core subunit of the COPII coat protein complex, which facilitates the budding and cargo selection of vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi apparatus[1][3][4][5]. As a cargo adaptor, SEC24B is essential for the transport of select membrane and secretory proteins, including those necessary for embryonic development and proper neural tube closure[4]. SEC24B’s role extends to the regulation of secretion of key proteins involved in lipid homeostasis, such as PCSK9, and recent research implicates it as a regulator of ferroptosis, linking vesicle traffic to neurodegenerative disease mechanisms[4]. Mutations in SEC24B are associated with neural tube defects and other congenital disorders[4][5]. SEC24B belongs to the SEC23/SEC24 family but is not regarded as a classical druggable therapeutic target due to its essential role in basic cellular machinery[3][4][5].
