Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (PTP)

Target
PTP
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Phosphatase
01

Overview

Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) are a large family of enzymes that catalyze the removal of phosphate groups from phosphorylated tyrosine residues on proteins. This dephosphorylation is a key regulatory mechanism in eukaryotic cell physiology, affecting processes such as signal transduction, cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, transformation, and synaptic plasticity. Maintaining proper balance between protein tyrosine kinases (which add phosphates) and PTPs (which remove them) is crucial; dysregulation contributes to diseases such as cancer, diabetes mellitus type II/insulin resistance syndromes and autoimmune disorders.
