Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Mitochondrial 1 (PTPMT1) is a dual-specificity phosphatase localized to the inner mitochondrial membrane. It plays a critical role in cardiolipin biosynthesis by dephosphorylating phosphatidylglycerol phosphate (PGP). Deficiency of PTPMT1 leads to impaired mitochondrial respiration and has implications for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. It is considered a potential therapeutic target, with efforts underway to develop specific inhibitors.
PTPMT1 inhibitors (in development) aim to modulate its phosphatase activity to restore cardiolipin levels and improve mitochondrial function.
