Protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 20 (PTPN20) is a cytoplasmic enzyme that belongs to the classical protein tyrosine phosphatase family, involved in the removal of phosphate groups from tyrosine residues on target proteins. Unlike receptor-type PTPs, PTPN20 is not embedded in the cell membrane and thus is distributed in intracellular locations, including sites of actin polymerization, which suggests a role in regulating cytoskeleton dynamics and cell movement. PTPN20 undergoes alternative splicing, generating multiple isoforms with regulatory roles in cell signaling and innate immunity. However, the precise functions, cellular targets, and broader clinical significance of PTPN20 are still being studied, and its mechanisms in disease contexts remain incompletely defined.
