Overview

Protein unc-93 homolog A (UNC93A) is a multi-pass transmembrane protein predicted to contain twelve transmembrane helices, similar to other members of the major facilitator superfamily (MFS)[1][2]. It is expressed in the brain, especially in neurons within the cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, and hypothalamus, as well as in peripheral tissues[1][2]. UNC93A's gene expression is responsive to changes in nutrient availability, such as amino acid deprivation and starvation[1][2]. The protein is phylogenetically close to UNC93B1 and putative SLCs like MFSD11, but is not grouped into known SLC families nor associated with established substrates or drug interactions[2][3]. Its ortholog in C. elegans is involved in muscle contraction and may interact with potassium channels, but the mammalian function remains speculative and unlinked to ion channel activity or direct molecular transport[1][2]. Despite being a putative transporter, UNC93A’s physiological role, substrate specificity, and relevance in disease are currently unknown[1][2][3].

Biological functions

Nutrient sensing or response to starvation (expression is regulated by nutrient stress, especially amino acid deprivation and starvation in mice)Probably involved in neuronal protein trafficking
03

Disease associations

Other (no direct validated implication in specific human diseases, but related research suggests roles in regulation of neuronal function and muscle contractility in orthologs. Disease association remains undetermined)
